Mission and Organization

In order to realize the government's policy of achieving carbon neutral (CN) by 2050, the Green Transformation (GX greening, and changes in the structure of industry and society in response to the shift to CN) is essential. The GX Initiative (Tokyo Tech GXI) was conceived to promote research activities that will lead the GX society, strengthen startups, and substantiate industrial and social collaboration, and will be implemented as the Education and Research Reform (Organizational Development) Project in FY2022 of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Tokyo Tech GXI will be headquartered at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Institute of Innovative Research, Laboratory for Zero-Carbon Energy and will operate mainly at Institute of Innovative Research. Tokyo Tech GXI consists of approximately 400 energy research-related faculty members who belong to research institutes, academies, centers, and units for GX (Green Transformation) research, and collaborates with about 50 energy-related companies inherited from the International Research Center for Advanced Energy Systems International Research Center (AES) of the Tokyo Institute of Technology to form a platform. In addition, Tokyo Tech GXI, with the support of the Research and Industry-Academia Collaboration Division, has established an industry-academia collaborative research support organization to promote and accelerate problem solving. As shown in Figure 1, Tokyo Tech the entire university supports GX research. The introduction of GX into society requires a major paradigm shift in conventional industrial and social structures, and we aim to create a center of knowledge and a new academic discipline in GX research by collaborating with industry, academia, government, the community, and citizens, and by incorporating multiple perspectives from economics and sociology in order for GX technology to be accepted by society. By cooperating with each stakeholder, we aim to develop GX (Green Transformation) research toward the realization of CN and to lead the world in social implementation as an outcome.

GX Activity Themes

GXI will develop activities based on the following themes, taking advantage of the university's unique characteristics.

Activities

  1. Green Transformation (GX) Research
    • GX Research (1) Carbon-Circulating Green Industrial System Research
    • GX research (2) Research on energy solutions in collaboration with industry, government, academia, local communities, and citizens for the Greem Transformation of society
    • GX Research (3)Socioeconomics-based Research on Promoting GX
  2. Development of open innovation centers through industry-government-academia collaboration for GX research
  3. Creation and promotion of demonstration and research projects for advanced energy systems
  4. Clarification of the grand design for GX realization and path/policy recommendations for its realization
  5. Fostering Research Personnel with Both Specialized Research and Project Management Skills

Examples of Possible Project Areas for CN

  1. Renewable Energy: Solar Cell, Wind Power, etc.
  2. Carbon Neutral: Carbon Cycle Industry, CCUS, Carbon Recycling, Synthetic Fuels, CO2 capture
  3. Smart Network, Energy Management: energy storage, thermal storage, DR, VPP, microgrid, power trading, energy trading, energy system optimization
  4. Hydrogen, Ammonia: Energy Carriers
  5. Biomass: Plant factories, marine biomass (microalgae)
  6. Nuclear, Radiation, Materials & Measurements
  7. Local Government Collaboration: Collaborative activities for regional creation and local production for local consumption

We will promote these base activities in cooperation with industry, academia, government, local communities, and citizens.

IGAX

In recent years, it has become increasingly difficult to solve social problems alone, and it is important to cooperate and work together minwith others. Carbon neutrality and the green transformation to achieve it are just such issues.
Tokyo Tech GXI has organized an Industry-Government-Academia Committee for GX (IGAX) to solve this problem.
The goal of IGAX is to create industry-academia, industry-industry, and industry-government-academia partnerships for GX. We hope that the characteristics and advantages of each organization will be mutually respected and developed, resulting in innovations that have not been achieved by anyone else in the world. IGAX aims to accelerate GX collaboration among industry, government, and academia by providing the latest GX information and sharing it among its members. We will make full use of the community network of Tokyo Tech GXI to create an environment for information and collaboration.

We hope that through IGAX, GX technology will spread to benefit Japan and the world. We welcome anyone who agrees with this policy. We would appreciate your understanding that we charge a membership fee for the operation of IGAX.
Please feel free to contact the Tokyo Tech GXI office for more details.
